Vertical Composition with Blue and White

by Piet Mondrian :

Our word description of our abstract drawing:

You should use a paper 13 and a half inches long and 6 and a half inches wide. Going from left to right, there's a thick black line one inch from the edge of the paper (it's from top to bottom). Then, three inches from the black line, is another black line (it's from top to bottom, too).
All of the black lines in this picture are one fourth of an inch thick.
On the right side of the second black line is another thick, black line, three inches up from the bottom of the paper, but this one is horizontal. Still on the right side of the second black line is another black line that is one inch down from the top of the paper. This one is horizontal, too. The little rectangle that it makes is colored in blue. All the rest is colored in a very light tan.

 Reflections on our progress:

Dear Vahagn and Paul,

You did a wonderful job, except for one thing: on the right side of the second black line, the horizontal black line that was three inches up from the bottom is too high. Other than that, it's perfect. We should have given you a better description of the background color. I think we could have said it was off-white, and that would have been closer.

Sincerely,

Naomi and Spencer
